The Keto Minute

Part 6  Holistic Intervention

...featuring Dr. Korman and the Keto Cowboy

This is Part 6 in our 6-Part Mini-Series on

“Our Immune Systems"

We've talked a lot in this 6-part series about how to keep yourself healthy and make your gut more healthy, so you can avoid the cold and flu. We want to talk today about what happens if you do get sick.  Let's start with a cold.  What are a couple things you can do holistically if you do get a cold.

Dr. Korman replies, "I think a  humidifier is nice, and you can get some essential oils to add to it, such as eucalyptus, which is very nice because you want to keep your passages moist and open.  Another thing I really like is coital silver.  I like the use coital silver in your nose, your mouth, your ears and your eyes.  It's a really natural anti-microbial that you can easily find at any health food store.  In addition, consider coconut oil.  It, too, is an anti-microbial and anti-viral, (which is great for your cold and flu).  It is a wonderful product to use to strengthen your body against these viruses."

The Keto Cowboy prefers to use a home-made cough syrup when he's struck with a cold.  It's the only time he uses honey, and he uses it more as a medicine than he does to sweeten anything.  He feels, "You should get as local of honey as possible. It lasts forever, so keep it in your medicine cabinet." Here is his recipe:

The Keto Cowboy Cough Syrup/ Throat Soother.

  • Wild honey (as local as you can get it!) "We only use local honey for a few medicinal purposes, and this is one."

  • 1 drop of lemon essential oil

  • 1 drop of frankincense essential oil

  • 1 drop of peppermint essential oil

  • 1 drop of lavender essential oil

  • 1 spoonful of local wild honey

  • Mix all in a small glass bowl and use a spoon to dip into it and lick some off as needed.

What if you have flu symptoms of vomiting, and fever?  Dr. Korman advises that, "With the flu, you might also have diarrhea, and your digestive track is very inflamed, so you do not want to eat when you have the flu.  Stick with clear liquids like broths (bone broth is #1) or ginger tea, which is very soothing to the digestive track.  Sipping on these, along with filtered clean water is really the best course of action to take.  Rest is crucial. Your body NEEDS to rest.  If you feel able, try to get out to the sun for a short sit or even a short walk, and soak in some of that Vitamin D."

"When you have the flu, try not to go out in public and expose others.  This is the time to stay down and recuperate.  This is not the time to "muscle through" or "push through" at work.  It's not good for your body and it's not good for anyone who is near you, either.  This is your body telling you it needs rest, so listen, and rest while sipping clear liquids and maybe taking in a little sun if there is any to be had."

"This is the reason that, when you don't have the flu, you want to take continued steps to strengthen your immune system so that, the next time the cold and flu and other viruses come around, your immune system will be more equipped to fight those viruses off!"
